Unit 13 Managing Human Resources in Health and Social Care
This unit would examine the various steps involved in the controlling and regulating of individuals in the place of work in social care and health care. It would cover the aspects like team allocation, support from other employees, and improving upon the skills and knowledge related to the work. Different policy and legal structures would be explored in this unit for human resources management. The study would also explore the effectiveness of the organizational aspects and the management approach on the teams. It would be relevant for the persons having experience in the fields like recruitment, team management among others.
On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

LO1. Understand processes for recruiting individuals to work in health and social care
In this section, the processes in recruiting persons to work in healthcare and social care would be discussed. Processes of recruitment depend on factors like the requirements of the human resources, organizational policy, and different work roles among others. These processes are generally initiated by advertisements of the vacancies. Selection of best people includes interviews, shortlisting among others. There are different policy structures and legislations which regulate recruitment. These include rules on the rights of workers, safety and health of employees, codes of the workplace, and others.
LO2. Understand strategies for building effective teams for working in health and social care
This unit would study the strategies used in building effective teams in the domains of healthcare as well as social care. It would touch upon various relevant theories like the theories of Berlin, Woodcock, Gross, Tuckman, and McClelland. Team building depends on the types of teams like informal, formal, cross-disciplinary, inter-agency, and project group-based teams. It would also explore the influences of team purpose, leadership, roles, team morale, and individual priorities on effective team working.
LO3. Understand systems for monitoring and promoting the development of individuals working in health and social care
In this section, the systems for overseeing and looking after the growth of individuals working in healthcare and social care would be discussed. The monitoring involves processes like appraisals, periodic reviews, appraisal, feedback among others. Training and development of people begin with identifying individual needs, monitoring the performance, and other steps. The effectiveness of the systems would be discussed from the perspective of the uses of and social care and healthcare services. Strategies to promote continuing development like partnerships, action-centered learning among others would also be discussed.
LO4. Understand approaches for managing people working in health and social care
This section would discuss the ways to run the individuals involved in social care and healthcare. It would involve theories like transformational, transactional, theory of emotional intelligence, and the theories by experts like Vroom, and Yelton, Handy, Mintzberg, Goleman, and Fiedler. The different types of management of working relationships would also be discussed which would involve effective communication decisions, contingency management, role modeling, team building among others. The aspects of one’s own development would be discussed from angles like knowledge, qualifications among others.
